For the past 33 years, when people asked how Eric Gilliland and I met, I answered “Eric created me from one of his ribs.” During one of the roughest periods of my life, Eric offered endless hours of his patient ear, his loving arms, his thoughtful guidance and also his cluttered back room (which I promptly moved into, aware his former three offers were essential to my survival at that time). After a homeless person broke in, leaving the home untouched except for the shower, Eric didn’t invest in a security system but instead kept that window unlocked and left a clean towel out. The currency he put on laughter, stories and sharing is a lesson learned and applied every day by all who knew him. Given all the time life has to offer, it would truly still not be sufficient to list all of the inspiring examples I have of this beautiful man, incredible friend and profoundly talented and unique writer. His unpredictable humor ran the gamut from puns to punk rock, his literary knowledge was encyclopedic and his artistic collaboration was both bold and caring. It feels uncomfortable and is certainly uncharacteristic to post something so very personal, but Eric deserves (and enjoyed) praise. Things. Just. Won’t. Be. The. Same. @ergill2

In one of his last emails to me, Bob requested that I stop telling people he’s a “nice guy.” Though I hate to disobey a hero, I must share that Bob was a wonderful man and I cherished my time with him. Safe passage, my friend. #bobnewhart

Thank you to @archdigest @tycole @colson__horton and @rachwall_ for the lovely profile on the beautiful backdrop of our lives as they stand and smile today. A very heartfelt THANK YOU to my longtime friend @lyle_lovett for his dedication of “12th of June” to me and my family at @theryman last night. I will never forget it. Thanks also to his Large Band (they aren’t big). It’s truly a special gift to see and hear instruments played by their best players in the world. Especially when playing songs by one of our greatest songwriters ever. See you soon, fellas. And thank you again. XO.
